Our Story
From the humble beginnings of Mother Bethel in Philadephia, PA, and the phenomenal leadership of our first denominational leader, the Right Reverend Richard Allen, to the explosive and continued ministries throughout the international world, we, the East Tennessee Conference of the 13th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church are a vibrant and energetic network of churches whose purpose is to spread the empowering and life freeing message of Jesus Christ throughout the Eastern Region of Tennessee.
The East Tennessee Conference emerged at the turn of the 20th century from a subdivision of the larger Tennessee Conference, reflecting growth and the need for localized governance and pastoral oversight within that region. Born shortly after the Civil War under the guidance of formerly enslaved African Americans, the East Tennessee Conference is one of the historic annual conferences of the A.M.E. Church. It functions as a regional governing body within the 13th Episcopal District, serving congregations throughout eastern Tennessee under the leadership of the Bishop, who is assisted by the Presiding Elder(s).
The first established church of the East Tennessee Conference was Warren Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church whose legacy has been and continues to be the promotion of literacy, moral discipline, and civic and political organization.
